Spelling

Our Pioneer spelling curriculum has been carefully selected and designed using evidence-informed approaches to develop pupils' understanding of the English spelling system and ensure that learning is secure, meaningful and long-lasting. Rather than relying on the memorisation of spelling rules, the curriculum helps pupils to understand how the English language works by exploring spelling patterns, word structure and the relationships between sounds and letters.

The curriculum follows the National Curriculum progressively, enabling pupils to build on prior knowledge and apply their understanding with increasing confidence as they move through the school. Learning is planned cumulatively, allowing teachers to revisit and reinforce key concepts when needed to meet the needs of individual pupils and classes.

Spelling teaching builds upon the strong phonics foundations established in the Early Years and Key Stage 1. Pupils are encouraged to identify patterns, make connections and reason about the spelling of familiar and unfamiliar words. Through the study of morphology (how words are formed), etymology (the origins of words) and common spelling conventions, children develop a deeper understanding of why words are spelt as they are.

The curriculum is organised into carefully sequenced teaching blocks, providing regular opportunities for explicit spelling instruction alongside frequent application within reading and writing. Systematic retrieval and revisiting are integral to the curriculum, ensuring that previously taught concepts are consolidated and retained over time. Teachers use ongoing assessment to revisit learning, provide additional practice where needed and enrich pupils' understanding. We have tailored this for our mixed-age classes with suggested progression, but this can be adapted further so that spelling teaching is meeting children where they need to begin. The sequences are taught both as whole class lessons or within smaller groups for specific children.

By combining direct teaching, investigation, discussion and purposeful practice, our spelling curriculum develops accurate, confident spellers who are able to apply their knowledge independently across the wider curriculum. This approach not only supports pupils in meeting the statutory expectations of the National Curriculum but also equips them with the linguistic understanding needed for successful reading and writing.
